Band Stand Restoration Project
This page is dedicated to all of the people from 1933
to present involved in the building and preservation
of the "City Park and the Band Stand.
Did you know that the current band stand at Thorsness Park (LP City Park) was built in 1933?
Did you know that in 1997 the Lake Preston Progressive Community
Women (PCW)
started fundraising efforts to restore and preserve this city monument?
Did you know the PCW wrote and received a grant through the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation.
Did you know through private and group donations and the grant
they raised enough money to
complete the restoration project in 1998 and on June 13th, 1999 there will be a
rededication concert at the park?
.
Thanks to a number of private citizens and alumni from in and out of the area
for their contributions.
Thanks to all of the civic groups for their help and contributions.
Thanks to the hard work of PCW.
Because of your support the "Band Stand" will be enjoyed for many more years.
Below is an article in part taken from the Lake
Preston Times June 15, 1933 issue.
This definitely shows the flavor of an era.
Park Band Stand Dedicated Tuesday
There was a monster crowd out to the band stand dedication Tuesday evening and the
doings were appropriate and enjoyed.
The diamond ball game between the married and single was late in getting started but furnished a lot of fun. The benedicts won in the eleventh inning by a score of 9 to 8. Many enjoyed a picnic supper, but the lateness of the kitten ball game interested some, as many were anxious to get back to the game and raz Hall Plowman, who was umpiring.
The dedicatory exercises proper started shortly after 7:00 o"clock. After a selection by the band, Mayor Butler made some fitting and happy remarks and after another selection by the band introduced Chas. A. Alseth who gave a splendid address.
After another selection by the band Senator Emil Loriks was introduced and he also gave a fine talk. Both speakers praised the community spirit of Lake Preston which has resulted in the building the wonderful community center that the public spirited citizens of the community has made possible. They especially complimented them on their last undertaking which resulted in the building of the beautiful and substan6tial concrete band stand.
The Lake Preston community is justly proud of its swimming pool and park. We know of none equal to it in this part of the state and none anywhere in a town of the size of Lake Preston. Too much cannot be said in the praise of the P. R. Phinney, Joe Funk, H. A. Keith, J. W. Lawler and O. D. Thorsnes. The committee that has had general supervision of the park since its inception some seven or eight years ago. This committee has worked unselfishly and with zeal through the years without a cent of pay and by their good work have built a monument not only to the community but to themselves.
One of the big features of the evening was the splendid music furnished by the high school band. This organization is a big thing, if not the biggest, among things Lake Preston is proud of.
